Over the last year our church has been working with Paul Nixon, a church consultant through the Epicenter group. Our focus has been on church renewal and vitality. The clergy group of which I am a part has read a variety of extremely useful literature as part of our ongoing discussion. Shift is by far one of the most compact books on the topic which I am certain will be very accessible to our lay leaders. The structure of the book allows for focused discussion on the 6 major topics he outlines and that would certainly translate to individual discussion sessions. I plan to offer this book as a Lenten study this year. I highly recommend it for both clergy and laity who have deep interest in church renewal.
This is a good book for helping church leaders think through the shifts they need to lead their churches through to become fully healthy congregations. Much of the information in the book was not new to me, but it did present some of the points from a slightly different angle and had some diagrams that were helpful for visual thinkers. The author asserts that churches need to make five major culture shifts to maintain health. The shifts are 1) from fellowship to hospitality, 2) from worship as an event to worship as a lifestyle, 3) from membership to discipleship, 4) from "serve us" to service, and 5) from "survival mentality to generosity. There were some helpful suggestions for how to help churches make the shifts, but I thought the chapter on the shift from "survival mentality" to generosity was a little skimpy. The author included a short list of recommended resources for going deeper into each shift. Overall, this is a good introduction to the shifts that churches will need to make to stay relevant and healthy.
